CEBU, Philippines — Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia has assured bus operators in the province that there will be no monopoly in the operation of the Cebu North Bus Terminal (CNBT).
This after two mini-bus operators in northern Cebu sought a meeting with the governor after hearing that a prominent bus company seeks exclusivity in the operation of CNBT which will reopen next week in its new location.
Garcia assured the mini-bus operators in Carmen and Borbon that she will not allow any bus firm to dominate the terminal since CNBT is for all bus operators.
“Ako sila giingnan nga dili gyud na mahitabo kay si Governor Gwen is not the type of governor nga mada anang ingon nga i-monopolize ang operation sa terminal,” said Fifth District Board Member Andrei “Red” Duterte.
CNBT is set to resume its partial operation on its new location at the compound of SM City Cebu in Mabolo, Cebu City on October 12 while the full operation will be on October 15, 2020.
The Cebu provincial government in partnership with SM Prime Holdings Inc. will be the one to manage the terminal.
After the community quarantine was implemented because of COVID-19 pandemic, the terminal in Subangdaku, Mandaue City was closed and a temporary was set up in Consolacion.
Earlier this year, Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes expressed his disinterest to renew the contract for lease of the property to Cebu City government as Mandaue City has other plans for the property.
The Capitol which also operates the Cebu South Bus Terminal in Natalio Bacalso Avenue, Cebu City decided to take over the operation of CNBT since majority of the passengers are residents of Cebu Province in the north. — GMR (FREEMAN)
