Chinese firm eyes $100M investment

CEBU, Philippines — A Chinese enterprise is interested to invest as much as $100 million in waste-to-energy facility in Cebu.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia said that Chinese Consul General Jia Li told her about the possible investment during the latter’s courtesy visit at the Capitol last week when she made known her interest of putting up a waste-to-energy facility here.

Garcia said the consul told her that a Chinese enterprise in Cebu that is involved in garbage disposal is interested in putting up the WTE facility.

"They plan to build a refuse power station in Cebu with disposable capacity of 800 tons a day," Garcia said.

In fact, the Chinese enterprise has already done their initial feasibility research and planning to invest as much as $100 million during the initial stage.

Garcia said that she will listen to them if they already have an area or they need an area, since the province has lots of properties.

The governor assured it will undergo the proper process whether through a build-transfer-operate scheme, unsolicited proposal or bidding, etc.

"As much as possible we will not sell.  We will not donate nor dispose of our property in any way," Garcia said.

She added that several properties had been donated and sold when she was away for six years.

"We will try to look into all the documents regarding these properties that were disposed of to see if we can still recover these properties back to the province of Cebu - for the Cebuanos,” she said. — Jed Harvey M. Ondiano (FREEMAN)
