CEBU, Philippines - A mother and her nine-month-old baby, who were waiting for a ride, were killed after they were hit by a vehicle in Barangay Dakit, Bogo City yesterday afternoon.
Mariemilie Lopez, 33, and her daughter, Arriane Therese, were killed after the Ford wagon driven by 27-year-old James Tan of White Hills Subdivision, Banawa Cebu City, rammed the waiting shed where the victims were waiting for a tricycle.
Based on investigation, Tan was travelling from Daanbantayan en route to Cebu City when he decided to overtake a motorcycle ahead of him.
However, Tan allegedly did not notice that the motorcycle he was about to overtake was also turning left.
To avoid hitting the motorcycle, Tan allegedly swerved his vehicle to the left, but instead lost control and accidentally hit another motorcycle, which was parked by the roadside.
Tan then hit an electric pole before slamming into the waiting shed where the victims were sitting.
The mother and daughter were waiting for a tricycle and were heading to the house of Mariemilie's cousin in Sitio Tabayjo, Barangay Dakit, Bogo City.
Mariemilie and Arriane were rushed to the hospital but the former was declared dead on arrival. Arriane, who was in critical condition, was rushed to a hospital in Cebu City but eventually died.
Tan is temporarily detained at the Bogo City Police station pending the filing of a complaint against him before the Prosecutor's Office. (FREEMAN)
