Freeman, Banat win in photo, writing tilt
CEBU, Philippines – The Freeman and its sister publication Banat News claim honors anew in the 2015 Milo Little Olympics National Finals photo and sportswriting contest.
TF photographer Joy Torrejos bagged second honors in the national photo contest and the only Cebu-based photographer who made it to the top 3 with his first out-of-town coverage for the Milo finale held in Laguna last month.
Torrejos’ winning entry focusing on trackster Britney Cañete of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu captured a sentimental moment for the young runner with her teammates right after she crossed the finish line.
Banat News also won second place in the sportswriting Filipino category through Caecent No-ot Magsumbol.
Magsumbol’s article entitled “Gugma sa pamilya nagtukmod kaniya mag-runner” is a story of a young vendor of candies from Dumaguete City who is trying his luck in running for athletic scholarship.
Apart from selling candies, Jason Padayao also helps his father in quarrying sand and gravel to support their family’s daily needs. The hardships pushed him to join running events for money and free schooling.
Earlier, The Freeman and Banat through Magsumbol, Lemuel Maglinte, Reynan Villena, and Vic Kintanar also got some honors through the Milo Little Olympics’ regional finals and the 39th Milo Marathon’s Cebu leg. — /FPL (FREEMAN)
