One dead in motorcycle and military truck collision

CEBU, Philippines - A 52-year-old man died after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a military truck past 10 a.m. yesterday in Barangay Malingin, Daanbantayan town.

Celso Aguipo of Calape, Daanbantayan died instantly after his motorcycle hit the military truck driven by Staff Sergeant Jun Moncenilla, 46, assigned at the 5th Special Forces of the Philippine Army based in Barangay Nangka, Balamban, Cebu.

Initial investigation revealed that Aguipo was driving towards the direction of Cebu City while the military truck was heading towards Daanbantayan in the opposite lane.

Police Officer 3 Alex Ricarte said in an interview that the military truck was bound for Daanbantayan to deliver donated school supplies.

Upon reaching Barangay Malingin, Aguipo allegedly attempted to overtake a vehicle and encroached the opposite lane which caused him to collide with the truck.

Traffic investigators failed to get a sketch of the incident because the vehicles have been removed from their original position.

SSgt. Moncenilla was taken into custody by Daanbantayan Police while waiting for the family of the victim if they are willing to file a case against him.

Meanwhile, an Isuzu elf skidded off the road in Barangay Poblacion, Ronda town past 9 p.m. on Friday.

The driver of the vehicle, Joselito Caputolan Ponce, 44, of Barangay Binaliw, Danao City, was safe after the accident.

Based on initial investigation, Ponce was driving the vehicle from Ginatilan town heading towards Barili, Cebu.

But when Ponce arrived at Barangay Poblacion, Ronda and while he was about to take a curved portion of the road, he reportedly lost control of the steering wheel and lost his brakes.

The elf flipped over towards the left and hit a traffic sign post and an electric post a meter away from the road.

The police said nobody was hurt during the accident.  (FREEMAN)
