Two commit suicide in Carmen, Cebu City

CEBU, Philippines - A pregnant woman and a construction worker hanged themselves in two separate suicide incidents in the province and Cebu City on Sunday.

In the first incident, Genielyn Lawas, 29, reportedly hanged herself Sunday morning through a rope strapped around her neck and tied to the ceiling of their house in Barangay Triumfo, Carmen town. She was found hanging by the five-year-old niece of her live-in partner, Bergie Osabel.

Lawas, reportedly a five to six-month pregnant, was reportedly a married woman but got separated from her husband when she allegedly started an affair with Osabel.

Osabel is also reportedly married and his wife is currently working overseas.

SPO3 Danilo Laurente, desk officer of Carmen Police Station, said that at 2 p.m. Sunday, the victim repeatedly asked Osabel why he went home late on that day when his duty hours as a security guard would supposedly end at 2 p.m. the other day.

Laurente added that around 8 a.m. before the suicide incident, Osabel asked permission from Lawas that he will go to Danao City to get his uniform.

Lawas reportedly begged her live-in partner not to leave but Osabel insisted.  Relatives of the victim were advised to submit Lawas’ body to autopsy.

Cebu City incident

In Cebu City, Joel Baguio, 32, was found hanging by his live-in partner, Anaclita Pacana, inside their house in Sitio Maomawan, barangay Babag around 5:30 p.m.

The police investigation showed that he was seen lifeless, with a nylon rope strapped round his neck and tied to the beam of the roof.

Pacana initially sought the assistance from their relatives and neighbors to immediately remove his body. She then called for police assistance.

Elements of Cebu City Police Office Homicide Section composed of SPO4 Alex Dacua, PO1 Michael Angelo Singson, PO1 John Errick Samosa and PO1 Reoful Adalim responded to the alarm.

Pacana revealed to the police that prior to the incident, the victim was under the influence of liquor when he got angry and engaged in a heated argument with her, forcing her to leave the house with their children.  Singson said that Baguio already attempted to kill himself twice.

He added that whenever Baguio and his live-in partner had a quarrel due to financial problems, the latter would usually call the barangay tanods and police for help. (FREEMAN)
