CEBU, Philippines - Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza is pushing to ban the use of plastic bags as a measure to solve floodings in the city.
Radaza said the use of plastics has been a major contributor to floodings in the city’s streets.
She said the members of the City Council and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office have already agreed to come up with an ordinance that would ban the use of plastic bags in all business establishments in the city.
Radaza believes that unless the use of plastic bags is banned, floodings will continue to be a problem because it clogs up the drainage system.
She urged the residents to do their share in solving the problem by reducing the use of plastics.
“It’s easy to make (policy) changes, but it’s the acceptance by the people that makes it hard to implement,†Radaza said.
She said that residents in low-lying Barangays Basak, Pusok, Poblacion, and Pajac usually experience floods during rainy season.
Regular de-clogging of drainage by the city government has minimized the problem, Radaza said.
She also assured of more drainage projects under her term. In fact, a drainage expansion projects in Barangay Gun-ob and Poblacion are ongoing. (FREEMAN)
