There are classes in Cebu City today

CEBU, Philippines - There will be classes in all levels in Cebu City today, unless the Department of Education (DepEd) or the school concerned declares otherwise, Mayor Michael Rama said yesterday.

DepEd Cebu City Schools Division Supt. Rhea Mar Angtud said only schools that sent a contingent to yesterday’s Grand Parade may be allowed to suspend classes.

“Duna ta klase. Twelve schools ra man ang involved sa 137 ka schools. Ato lang gitagaan ug rest day ang involved (There are classes today. Only 12 of the 137 schools are involved. We can give a rest day to the schools involved),” Angtud said.

The schools that sent contingents include the Inayawan Elementary School, Ramon Duterte Memorial National High School, Don Sergio Osmena Memorial National High School, Tejero Night High School, Alaska Elementary School, Apas National High School, Talamban Elementary School, Quiot Elementary School, Banilad Elementary School, Abellana National School, Don Carlos Gothong Elementary School, and Tisa Elementary School.

In the previous years, classes on the Monday following the Grand Parade were suspended, but Rama told reporters that declaring a suspension is not within his authority, unless there is a weather disturbance and upon recommendation by PAGASA.

“I cannot declare nga walay klase ugma. It is up to DepEd (Department of Education). They are the ones to give a recommendation… It (suspension) is the discretion of DepEd, schools, colleges, universities, whether private or public, to suspend classes. Not my call,” Rama said yesterday.

“There has been no advice from PAGASA based on the weather condition. So I cannot declare on the suspending classes,” the mayor added.

He said the City Council may recommend a suspension but did not.

These schools that sent contingents participated in the Sinulog Sa Kabataan sa Dakbayan (city) last January 12.

Abellana National School bagged the first place for the secondary division while Banilad Elementary School won in the elementary division.  (FREEMAN)
