Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Several business establishments are now partnering with the Land Transportation Office-7 for their respective road safety programs.

LTO-7 regional director Raul Aguilos said that other establishments were more focused on the conduct of defensive driving seminars and other road safety seminars which are envisioned to develop road safety consciousness and advocacy in their environment and workplaces.

Aguilos cited that Cemex Corporation located in Naga City, Cebu will establish a traffic discipline zone along the national highway and transform the once accident prone-area into a traffic safety zone and attain zero accident in the area.

“We would like other establishments to do the same,” said Aguilos.

Meanwhile, Aguilos said that in their two-day random roadside drug testing in the Southern part of Cebu, 11 out of 180 mini-bus and multicab drivers were found positive for illegal drugs.

Ten drivers were also found positive for illegal drugs when LTO-7 conducted a drug testing in Naga City and one in Carcar City.

Licenses of drivers found positive for illegal drugs shall be revoked and they shall undergo rehabilitation in a center accredited by the Department of Health and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency. Violators also have to pay a fine of P10,000.00.

The conduct of roadside drug testing is aimed towards eliminating drug addicts from operating motor vehicles especially drivers of public utility vehicles and to prevent road accidents caused by drug abuse.

The recent conduct of drug testing is part of LTO's celebration of Road Safety Month this month as well as in preparation for the June 3 opening of classes.-(FREEMAN)
