Soc to accompany son to police: Joavan to surrender on Monday

Brenda Batuto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Talisay City Mayor Socrates Fernandez will surrender his son Joavan to the police tomorrow.

This is according to Superintendent Elmer Lim, officer-in-charge of Talisay City Police Station.

Lim told reporters yesterday that he and Mayor Fernandez talked on the phone and the mayor promised to bring his son tomorrow to his office with their lawyer.

However, Lim said that while Joavan has yet to surrender, the hot pursuit operation against him continues.

He said it is not only the Talisay police that are looking for Joavan but also the other police units.

He said he already informed Cebu Police Provincial Director Patrocinio Comendador about the mayor’s promise.

Tomorrow, Monday, the police is scheduled to file frustrated murder case against Joavan before the city prosecutors office.

Eduardo Largo Jr., the alleged victim of Joavan, already executed an affidavit.

Last Thursday dawn, Joavan was allegedly the back rider of a motorcycle who kept crossing the road in front of Danryan Marketing, a car shop in Cebu South Coastal Road in San Isidro where Largo works as watchman.

Joavan disembarked from the motorcycle and asked Largo for the phone number of the car shop owner but the victim said that he did not know the phone number of his boss.

Joavan allegedly got mad and shot the victim.

Largo had two gunshot wounds but was discharged from the hospital on Friday afternoon.

Largo told the reporters yesterday that he does not have any conflict with Joavan.

He said they did not argue, and he was just surprised he was shot.

Largo was hired as a watchman of the car shop last Wednesday. Because of the incident, Largo’s family now fear for their lives especially their three kids.

Lim said that they will visit the family of the victim and will see what they can do to help them.

On other hand, reports said Joavan considers this new allegations against him as politically motivated, something that the Talisay police chief does not believe.

Joavan reportedly claimed Largo is being used by a politician to destroy his name so that his father, who is running as city councilor, will be affected.

But Largo said he has no contacts with politicians as he used to work only as laborer at the Carbon Market. After that, he was driving a trisikad and he was happy when he was hired to work as a watchman at the car shop and received a salary of P1,000 per week
