Pastillas!

CEBU, Philippines – No, this is not about this new TV character that’s gaining popularity among noontime viewers. But this pastillas is gaining popularity too, especially among many at The Freeman editorial office. A lady proofreader has recently introduced it to the other employees – and the thing has since sweetened the days at the office.

Okay, it’s good business for the seller. A box of 20 pieces (balls) of pastillas goes empty in just minutes. Everybody’s eyes grow dazed while chewing the blissful sweetness.

But – surprise! – making pastillas is actually not rocket science. It’s so easy to make that it’s almost unbelievable that the outcome tastes so good. Proof to the simplicity of making pastillas is this recipe from pinoycookingrecipes.com:

Ingredients:

2 cups powdered milk (Anchor or Nido)

1 can, 14 oz condensed milk

Sugar for coating

NOTE: Add half to 1 cup powdered milk if needed.

Procedure:

1. Combine powdered milk and condensed milk. Mix and blend evenly using a spoon.

2. Set aside for 10 to15 minutes before shaping.

3. Shape into balls or mini logs.

4. Wrap the pastillas in a cellophane or food paper.  If you don’t like wrapping, make into balls and place individually in small tart cups (available in supermarkets).

And now the yummy dessert is ready!
