Angels with Wheels - with William Tiu Jr.

Magis. Excellence. Leadership. Service. For several decades, these Ignatian values have guided Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu in the formation of young men and women for others. And on its 60th Jubilee Year, Sacred Heart School remains committed to this mission for God's greater glory.

The American Wheelchair Mission and the Knights of Columbus - California partnered with the Sacred Heart School - Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) community and Alumni Association (SHS-AAA) to provide free assistive devices - such as wheelchairs, walkers and canes - to children and adults. For several months in the last quarter of 2014, the SHS-AdC clinic personnel, headed by Dr. Josephine Yu - Cubillan, visited several barangays in Metro Cebu to screen possible beneficiaries.

The wheelchairs were distributed to over 60 families recently at the Lux Oriens Gym of the SHS-AdC Canduman Campus. In attendance were beneficiaries and their families, members of the SHS-AdC community and Alumni Association, headed by Mr. Franco Soberano (Class 2003), representatives from the American Wheelchair Mission and Knights of Columbus - California. The school's Campus Minister, Fr Joel Liwanag, SJ, began the celebration with a Thanksgiving Eucharist. Fr. Manuel Uy, SJ, school President, also spoke and remarked how not all angels have wings and that some have wheels. In the afternoon, house visits were also conducted around Barangay Canduman in Mandaue City to distribute wheelchairs to individuals who could no longer leave their households due to disability or difficulty. To date, more than 80 assistive devices have been distributed with several more awaiting deserving beneficiaries.
