Dear Dr. Jen,

I am in my mid-30’s and I noticed that my skin has been looking dull.  I used to have very nice glowing skin in my 20’s but I don’t understand what happened. What products can you recommend?

Ali

Dear Ali,

Dull skin may be due to the build up of the stratum corneum, which technically is the “dead” skin layer.  This layer is supposed to naturally desquamate every 28 days or so.  However, sometimes the stratum corneum needs a little help.

You can go to your PDS derma and have a AHA or BHA (alpha or beta hydroxyl acid) peel done or a diamond peel (loosely labeled as microdermabrasion).  Better yet, you can get a chemical peel coupled with a diamond peel every 2 weeks to maintain healthy, glowing skin.

Products containing AHA or BHA can be applied at home.  Just be careful that the concentration is low so you won’t cause any irritant contact dermatitis.

Dear Dr. Jen,

I read in your previous column that toner or creams do not alter the size of pores.  Are there any procedures that can make them appear smaller?

Claire

Dear Claire,

Your best bet is to undergo fractional laser.  This is a non-invasive procedure that can cause skin to regenerate.  Fractional laser remarkably improves the appearance of ice-pick scars and large pores. Your face will appear red for a day or more, depending on the machine and the settings being used. Depending on your skin, you may need 1-6 sessions spaced a month apart. Hope that answers your question!
