A good day for a G.O.O.D. MISSION

CEBU, Philippines - Diabetes and thyroid disorders affect millions of Filipinos. These two diseases carry significant morbidity. Diabetes increases the risk of a cardiovascular event four-fold and its complications include blindness, kidney disease and poor wound healing. Thyroid disorders affect the overall metabolism of the body and can cause fluctuations in weight, fatigue, infertility, and abnormal heart rhythms.

One of the missions of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists-Philippines Chapter (AACE-PC or “AACE Philippines”) is to reach out to fellow citizens and help improve their lives and their health by increasing endocrine awareness.  As part of its advocacy program,  AACE Philippines held its annual Endocrine Awareness Day by sponsoring a medical mission called “A G.O.O.D. Day”— G.O.O.D. standing for Goiter, Obesity, Osteoporosis, and Diabetes.

This year, the event coincided with the celebration of World Diabetes Day and was held with the participation of the Quezon City Government.  Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte graciously visited the event and rallied the patients to be aware of endocrine diseases and how to prevent them from happening.

Laboratory tests, such as blood glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride sreeening were provided free of charge to the patients.  This was followed by medical and nutritional consultation with endocrinologists, diabetologists and nutritionists.  Free medicines were provided.  After the blood screening, patients participated in “Zumba” dance sessions, a lay forum,  and diabetes bingo game.  Of course, breakfast was served (or else they would have had hypoglycaemia!).The event lasted for half a day and was a resounding success.
