The Freeman

Seen. Delighted. Understood. Inspired. Empowered. There’s no better time to feel all these with Pride Month unfolding. It’s the perfect opportunity to explore diverse stories that reflect the experiences, struggles, and triumphs of the LGBTQIA+ community.

With Disney+’s range of films and series that center on queer characters and narratives, here’s a list of some of the most unforgettable scenes and lines that will cut through you, tug your heart, tickle your funny bones, awaken your senses, and open your mind about the real and authentic way queer people live.

All of Us Strangers (2023) – The Comfort in Solitude

Adam Scott – hot! Paul Mescal – scorching! Their chemistry – fever pitch! But beyond these, everything felt real and raw when their characters had this exchange about the feeling of being isolated from their loved ones.

Out (2020) – The Compassionate Assurance

Wouldn’t it be nice to have the kind of compassion and assurance in life that Greg received from his mom in this scene? Everyone needs people in their lives who would simply support them and want the best for them. Greg’s mom made it possible for him.

Fire Island (2022) – The Undeniable Reality

The pressure to conform to society’s beauty standards is tough, especially in the gay community. At this moment, Howie (Bowen Yang), thinking that he didn’t fit the mold, felt vulnerable and rejected. But here’s a silver lining: the concept of beauty has now become more inclusive, empowering everyone with the chance to be valued and loved just as they are.

Jungle Cruise (2021) – The Sincere Confession

For many LGBTQIA+ individuals, coming out is a personal milestone. This was portrayed with warmth and subtlety when McGregor (Jack Whitehall) told Frank (Dwayne Johnson) that his “interests happily lie elsewhere.” It was a sincere and beautiful moment that emphasized the significance of understanding and compassion in such a situation.

Black Swan (2010) – The Uncharted Territory

Exploring uncharted territory when it comes to sexuality can be a transformative and beautiful journey, much like Nina’s (Natalie Portman) experience in Black Swan. The beauty lies in the courage to step into the unknown, explore beyond the norms, and embrace and celebrate one’s authentic identity.

Love, Simon (2018) – The Young Love

What is young love if it isn’t magical and fun? Despite possible challenges of coming out, Simon (Nick Robinson) and Bram’s (Keiynan Lonsdale) romance is filled with genuine connection, laughter, and heartwarming moments, showcasing that everyone gets a shot at an enchanting and joyful love story.

Pose (2018 - Season 1, Episode 6) – The Heartbreaking Performance

The category is performance of a lifetime! Despite facing immense challenges, Pray Tell (Billy Porter), through a heartbreaking rendition of Donny Hathaway’s ‘For All We Know,’ exhibited unwavering determination, inspiring the community to keep fighting for a better future. As a bonus, Blanca (MJ Rodriguez) also sang ‘Home’ with Pray Tell. This soulful duet captured their longing for a place where they feel more welcomed.

Modern Family (2013 - Season 5, Episode 1) – The Moment When Love Wins

After same-sex marriage was legalized in California, Modern Family had an episode in which Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) tried to pop the question. It was filled with ups and downs, but their heartfelt, simultaneous proposal beautifully illustrated that true love always finds a way, proving that ultimately, love indeed wins.
