Global Power partners with Lafarge for Yolanda rebuilding efforts

CEBU, Philippines - Global Business Power Corporation partnered with Lafarge Republic, Inc. in developing an initiative aimed to lower the costs of rehabilitation projects, such as the rebuilding efforts for Yolanda-affected areas, through the introduction of a special cement variant.

GBP is the power generation subsidiary of the Metrobank Group of Companies.

“Kapit-Balay” is a high quality proprietary cement blended with fly ash, particularly coming from Cebu Energy Development Corporation and Toledo Power Company, that provides appropriate structural strength suited for one to two-story homes being built by non-government organizations, local government units and other government agencies.

The partnership between GBP and LRI, which is a joint commitment to rebuilding efforts and sustainability, enables both to contribute in lowering the overall cost of rebuilding.

Fly ash is a non-hazardous coal power plant by-product derived from clean coal technology, a process involving injection of limestone during combustion of coal. It is a fine powder that can be utilized as a pozzolan, a material that has greater compressive strength and lesser environmental impact used in high-performance blended cement.

A reflection of the quality standards in GBP’s operations, LRI Director Don Lee said that GBP’s fly ash is the only one in the country that passed LRI’s standards. Cement with fly ash possesses good workability, smoother finish, enhanced durability, and good strength.

“Delivering more than just power and light, GBP has always made its obligation to make a difference in the lives of the community, particularly in the areas of health, environment, education and development.  “Kapit-Balay” is one of the activities that we have identified and taken into action the community's needs, while having a partner with the same vision,” GBP Chairman Francisco Sebastian said.

Aptly named “Kapit-Balay,” meaning kapitbahay or neighbor, the cement is sold directly to non-governmental organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Gawad Kalinga, interested local government units, and the National Housing Authority for projects in areas affected by Yolanda, as well as the recent Bohol earthquake, thereby helping lower “Kapit-Balay’s” price. Other than giving a discount, providing fly ash is also part of GBP’s corporate social responsibility efforts for Yolanda and Bohol earthquake victims. (FREEMAN)
