[Summary] => I’m not really a typewriter collector (not like my friend George Mamonluk, whose noodles I patronize to help build up his stable of vintage typewriters and fountain pens), but I realized this past week that I can’t resist a classic when I see one, even when I can barely squeeze it into the budget or, just as critically, into my man-cave.

Years ago, playtime means being out in the streets playing with neighbors and homework means jotting it down on a paper or if you have enough money, typing it using a typewriter. This generation, playtime means gadgets and homework means "googleing" it on computers.

Before I go to the main subject of this week’s piece, may I please ask the people at the Office of the Presidential Spokesperson (it’s hard to tell these days who that person really is, but I’m guessing or hoping that I have some friends in that office) to stop spamming my mailboxes with their press releases and “good news” bulletins? Each one of those PDF messages is about 5 megabytes, or about a hundred times as large as this column.

A vintage Olympia typewriter haunts my dreams. Actually, that typewriter belongs to a friend of mine and I never had the chance to ask her if she’d sell it to me before she moved to the US.

More (and last) from San Francisco: since my son-in-law Jerry was driving us into the city from the airport in a rented hybrid (another new experience for me: these things don’t go vroom-vroom at startup), and since Jerry and I share the same passion for old mechanical objects (vintage pens for me, vintage radios and aeronautical books for him), we decided to stop over first at the San Francisco Antique and Design Mall, which was on the way.
