I remembered this poem by William Butler Yeats that my English professor Resil Mojares took time to discuss in class.

Caftans are sooo 14th century — but that doesn’t mean they’ve lost their modern appeal. There’s a case to be made for wafting down a staircase in front of a captive audience and making a splash in a floor-length embellished caftan. Or, you know, heading to the supermarket in something that doesn’t give you muffin top. Or a wedgie.

What took me so long? I thought to myself in the middle of my two-week tour of Türkiye (“land of the Turks”) with my family where we went on a 3,000-kilometer whirling dervish of a road trip circling the Western half of the country from Istanbul (the only city embracing both Europe and Asia), through the ancient civilizations of the Aegean Sea, inland towards the rock wonders of Cappadocia, then westward through the nation’s capital of Ankara and back to Istanbul.

Now it’s Istanbul, not Constantinople

Been a long time gone, Constantinople

Now it’s Turkish delight on a moonlit night

Every gal in Constantinople

Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople

So if you’ve a date in Constantinople

She’ll be waiting in Istanbul.
