                    [Title] => The art of hosting dinners
                    [Summary] =>

Once in a blue moon I host dinners for friends in different places. I did once in Puey Quiñones’ atelier and the last one was in my favorite La Cocina de Tita Moning near the Malacañang Palace.

Anyone who fills out a visa form is warned repeatedly of the high cost of living in Australia. It took me many months to come to terms with it and stop converting everything to pesos.  It was too stressful. I wanted to start enjoying shopping again and stop regretting being parted with my money. I had many hurdles to overcome.

Was I a little girl so the house seemed so large to me? Was I scared of the tall staircase because the darkness met me at the top? Or was it because at the top there hung the scary portrait of Salome holding the head of St. John the Baptist? I ran very fast every time I passed in front of that priceless oil painting by Juan Luna.

As you enter the market, the booth is to your left. There I buy a queso de bola cheese spread that I occasionally enjoy for breakfast. There they also sell a delicious bread pudding and salsa monja. I have also bought roast chicken but never knew it was a restaurant until my good friend Emily suggested that we take our advanced writing class there. A lot of us probably grew up with mayonnaise as a regular on our tables, spread on hamburgers and hotdogs, mixed with boiled eggs to garnish steamed fish, added to sardines as sandwich filling, and of course used as salad dressing. This creamy spread is now being actively resurrected (although it had not completely disappeared) with a new life by the makers of Lady’s Choice Mayonnaise.
