"There are ongoing discussions (for thrift banks), especially those undercapitalized ones to merge or look for a strategic partner," CTB incoming president Francisco Magsajo said.


He said the CTB, has in fact, been encouraging smaller thrift banks to consolidate.

marred the recent Chess Pambansa Millennium Grand Prix, is seeking  a formal
clarification and official ruling from the Bureau of Internal Revenue regarding

PCF chair Arturo Borjal said he will personally talk with BIR chief Dakila
Fonacier to get an official ruling on the matter to, once and for all, settle
the issue that drew an uproar from the players, particularly GM Rogelio
Antonio, Jr.

Philippine Chess Society president Reynato Sarmiento turned over yesterday P1
million to the Philippine Chess Federation, the first prize in the first Chess
Pambansa Millennium Grand Prix, the richest tournament in the country to be
held in Manila early this year.

The amount represents the lion share of the P2.5 million total prizes in the
seven-round knockout event, to be headed by GMs Eugene Torre and Rogelio
Antonio, Jr., slated March 22-April 18 at the Philippine National Bank
Auditorium.

Sarmiento, who is president of Real Bank, presented the check to PCF president
