[Title] => After a coup fails: We only hear denials!
[Summary] => Last Feb. 24th, the Arroyo Administration faced what really looked like a coup d'etat in the offing. Perhaps because of divine intervention, many participants of this coup were arrested, starting with 1st Lt. Lawrence San Juan who recently turned state witness and declared that he had conducted talks with the Magdalo group and the Communist Party of the Philippines (CCP) fueled by businessmen opposed to Pres. Arroyo.

"I wish I were tapped in the problem about Iraq," Mrs. Marcos told Time’s Nelly Sindayen in an interview published in the July 3 issue of the news magazine. "I knew Saddam enough that I could have talked him into surrendering."

Manila-based Nelly Sindayen, citing her own sources, had earlier written that the plot was hatched during a clandestine meeting by political personalities who were disappointed with Mrs. Arroyo.

Contacted by The STAR, Sindayen said she has not received any copy of the hold-departure order from the Bureau of Immigration.

President Arroyo and Margarita "Tingting" Cojuangco exchanged busses on the cheek yesterday as they met here for the graduation rites of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) though their chance encounter seemed far from a reunion.

Cojuangco is the wife of former Tarlac congressman Jose "Peping" Cojuangco, now president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, who was accused of financing the destabilization plot against Mrs. Arroyo last month.

But from my on-and-off readings of Time Magazine (the continuity being largely dependent on wherewithal than interest), I know she has been its long-time correspondent.

My earliest recall of the name Nelly Sindayan was from at least the mid or late 1980s. I remember because I often mention it in reference to what I used to lecture young reporters about regarding the need to earn a byline, not demand it as a matter of course.

[Summary] => It may be a matter of semantics but the distinction is important. If it was a coup, then the military would have been the active partner, using its firepower and brawn to seize power from civilian government. If it is a withdrawal of support, it was the civilian component (Cory crowd and opposition et al) which was in charge trying to do an EDSA by enlisting a part of the military behind them. I am inclined to believe that it is the latter which is a more precise description of what really happened during the attempted seizure of government power last February 24.
