John Ruskin, the English poet, once wrote, "You may either win your peace or buy it: win it, by resistance to evil; buy it, by compromise with evil." I think Ruskin would agree with the premise that you can only find peace one of two ways: either live in a castle or fortress that is so secure, so strong and so impenetrable that no onenot even God Himselfcould ever come through, or make peace with your enemies.

Few people have ever heard of Lilias Trotter, but it didnt have to bet that way. A young art student in 19th-century England, Trotter had great talent as a painter. The well-known artist and professor John Ruskin recognized it, took her under his tutelage, and saw her ability blossom over a short time. In a letter he stated that she was "the best of my pupils". She was to become the next Ruskin protégé of renown.
