One of my favorite bumper stickers reads, “My Boss is a Jewish Carpenter.” It is a bit witty as it refers to Jesus as the Jewish Carpenter whose adoptive father, Joseph, had taught him the craft. But the important part of the sticker refers to the words, “My Boss.” It refers to how we look at our relationship with Jesus.

A New York City man who sold books and magazines on the street was freed after being trapped for 2 days under a mountain of paper in his apartment. The man’s collection of printed materials, which he had stacked wall to wall and floor to ceiling, collapsed and buried him alive. Emergency workers filled 50 garbage bags as they dug through the debris just to reach him.

In the eyes of most people in the crowd, Jesus was a common criminal going to the place of execution. So to help Him bear His cross was both degrading and humiliating.

There’s a lake near our home in the mountains that is known for good fishing. To get there, I had to hike two miles up a steep ridge – a hard climb for an old-timer like me. But then I discovered that it’s possible to drive within a half-mile of the lake. I spent most of a day driving several mountain roads until I found the one that got me the closest. Then I carefully mapped the road so I could find it again.
