[Title] => Narvasa: GMA asked Erap to go into exile
[Summary] => President Arroyo wanted detained former President Joseph Estrada to go into "voluntary exile" so he could be "spared the humiliation and embarrassment" of facing corruption charges, former chief justice Andres Narvasa testified before the Sandiganbayan yesterday.

Narvasa told the Special Division of the anti-graft court that Mrs. Arroyo talked to him over the phone during a meeting with a go-between, businessman Ernest Escaler, in a Chinese restaurant sometime in late January 2001.

The former chief justice was the 39th witness for the defense in the plunder case against Estrada.

Narvasa said Estrada was given two options by the Arroyo administration: submit a formal resignation letter before going into exile, or leave the country quietly through "the back door" without a resignation letter, taking his assets with him.

Narvasa said Escaler, a close friend of his son Andres Jr. (Chito), handed him a cell phone during the meeting. PAF spokesman Col. Lino Horacio Lapi-nid presented three scenarios to deal with an aircraft that has Estrada on board.

"First, the fighter jets would scramble, intercept the target and order the pilot of the private aircraft to land," he said.
