The government collected a total of P38 billion in income taxes from businessmen and professionals like doctors and lawyers last year, Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez reported yesterday.
"It was the first time the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) raised such a huge amount from this group of taxpayers who are known to cheat on their tax obligations," he said.
Suarez heads the House oversight committee, which monitors the performance of revenue agencies, principally BIR and Customs.

Over breakfast at the Tuesday Club, I asked BIR Chief Jojo Buñag if it is true, as reported by the House Oversight Committee that the increase in tax collection is more the result of better enforcement and performance of his collectors than the increase in the VAT rate to 12 percent. Jojo said it is true. The impact of the higher VAT rate is not as significant as improved collection by his agency. Jojo surmises that because the input VAT is also 12 percent the net increase is only about one percent.

Alarcio, in a telephone interview with The Freeman, did not specify from what units the physically unfit policemen belong.
