When the guilty verdict by Judge Benjamin Pozon was read on national television, American Daniel Smith simply looked stunned, almost to the point of being catatonic. He could not believe it was happening to him, a 21-year-old kid from St. Louis, Missouri. Smith was fresh out of high school when he volunteered for the Marines in 2004, hoping it would help him save up for college and get a good start in life.
