From his father’s successful business selling a selection of eastern seashells, various trinkets, and other Victorian artifacts in London, British Trader Marcus Samuel grew up exposed in trading. Armed with an entrepreneurial spirit, he soon had an expansive vision for global trade. Without cash or credit, he left for London to connect with his father’s agents in the Far East, traveled back and forth, and began trading in Japanese coal, tea, fibers, cereals, and metals. Soon, he formed his new firm, Samuel & Co., with his brother, started selling coal and eventually, formed alliances with Japanese higher authorities. These alliances later gave Samuel a hand in getting into the oil business.

In their home markets, banks are natural competitors. In the past decade, however, forces such as globalization and deregulation have made banks shed their innate caution towards – or even suspicion of – their peers. Banks often face growing pressure usually from overseas or non-traditional competitors. Their corporate customers expect more services, better products and increased availability.
