My move to the ICT industry resulted to a large extent from more than a decade of struggling with questions of the social relevance of my scientific research. While a part of the lively mathematical community in Bonn, I was also engaged by basic social issues raised by the socio-political movements in Europe (the student revolts of the late 60s) and in Asia (the Vietnam War, martial law in the Philippines).
