 Residents of a historic island town in Sulu that witnessed bloody conflicts in decades past celebrated Sunday the 109th anniversary of their municipality, optimistic the peace  in the area will boost efforts to foster sustainable development in their 50 barangays.

He is survived by his wife, former Sen. Santanina Rasul.

A son of the late Sen. Hadji Butu Abdul Bacqui, the first Muslim Filipino senator, Rasul served as a judge of Sulu before he was appointed Philippine ambassador to Saudi Arabia by President Corazon Aquino from 1989 until 1993.
