Philippine lacrosse squad downs Wales

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine lacrosse team continues to roll in the World Lacrosse Women’s Championship. 

Following a historic win in the tournament earlier in the week, the Philippines tallied another victory, this time against Wales, 12-4, in the classification round Thursday in Tokyo, Japan. 

The Filipinas, thus, have a chance to finish ninth in the tournament. They will take on Argentina in the ninth-place game set on Saturday evening. 

The Philippines started off with guns blazing, punching in goals from Ria Lagdameo, Emma Barrows and Steph Lazo to go up, 3-0. 

An Emily Hook goal with about 40 seconds remaining in the first quarter put Wales on the board, but the Philippine onslaught continued. 

A free position goal from Nia Carrera, and Lazo, followed by consecutive goals by Kalena Johnson, Annika Bennett and Barrows pushed the winning squad ahead, 8-1, heading to the fourth period. 

Goals by Ellie Jones, Sophy Coombes-Roberts and Sophy Coombes-Roberts could not turn the tides for Wales, as Abby Manalang, Sophia Russo and Bennett powered in insurance goals in the fourth.

The Philippines earlier defeated Czechia, 11-5, in the final pool match. It was the first-ever win of the country in the tournament.
