Complete decommissioning of MILF combatants eyed before Marcos’ term ends

MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos and leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front have agreed to complete the fourth and final phase of the decommissioning process for MILF combatants before his term ends, Malacañang said on Friday.
Marcos recently met with MILF chairman Ahod Ebrahim at the Palace, where they discussed ways to fully implement the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro and fast-track the region’s economic development.
Palace press officer Claire Castro said the discussion includes the completion of the fourth and final phase of the decommissioning process by 2027, and acceleration of programs and projects that would provide livelihood to combatants and their families.
“Both the government and the MILF have committed to fulfill their remaining obligations and sign the exit agreement before the end of President Marcos’ term,” Castro said.
She said the effort between the government and the MILF is not just about fulfilling an agreement, but also about providing a bright future for families who have been yearning for security and opportunity to live in peace.
The fourth and final phase, which reportedly involved 14,000 combatants and 2,450 weapons, was deferred by the MILF in 2025 amid concerns over the implementation of socioeconomic commitments.
Joint engagements resumed in August, followed by a meeting in September, which renewed efforts to address outstanding issues.
