The Heat mentor will be replacing Steve Kerr.
Spoelstra, who has Filipino blood, served as a lead assistant on Team USA’s 2024 Olympic gold medal squad.
Team USA missed the podium in the 2023 FIBA World Cup after falling against eventual World Cup champion Germany in the semifinals. The Americans also absorbed a 127-118 overtime loss Canada in the bronze medal match.
But the USA completed a five-peat of Olympic gold medals after ruling the Paris edition of the Games.
Now, Spoelstra, who started off as a video coordinator with the Heat in 1995 before being the head coach of the team in 2008, will be calling the shots for the basketball superpower.
He has won two championships with the Heat – a back-to-back with the big three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh leading the way. He steered Miami back to the finals after a few years with Jimmy Butler in the forefront.
