MANILA, Philippines — With a heavyweight backer, Charly Suarez could finally become a world champion – and do it on home soil.

The WBO International junior lightweight champion and No. 1 contender from Davao del Norte is in line to challenge reigning WBC titlist Emanuel Navarrete of Mexico in December.

Negotiations to make it happen are on according to his manager, former Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson, after Suarez worked his way to being a mandatory challenger with three straight wins in the United States.

“Gusto ko dito ang laban. ‘Yung champion labanan niya. We’re willing to finance,” declared Singson during a press conference last Tuesday.

Singson, who has announced his plans to run for Senate in next year’s mid-term elections, has tasked Rick Navalta, Suarez’ handler in the United States, to spearhead the discussion with the camp of Navarrete led by Top Rank’s Bob Arum.

Singson is willing to talk to the legendary American promoter himself to make it happen — at whatever cost.

“It’s the championship. Willing ako gumastos,” added Singson.

Plans for Navarrete (38-2-1) facing compatriot Oscar Valdez (32-2-0) is also in play but nothing is cast is stone, leaving the door open for Suarez.
