MANILA, Philippines — More than 5.2 million voters nationwide have been taken out of the Commission on Elections official list of voters and might not be able to cast their votes in next year’s polls, the Comelec said yesterday.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia said 5,216,625 registered voters were deactivated by the poll body recently.

Among the reasons for the deactivation were their failures to vote in two succeeding regular elections, loss of Filipino citizenship, exclusion based on court order, and incompetence or insanity as declared by a competent authority.

Garcia said those who had been deactivated would be deducted from the current total number of voters.

Apart from the deactivation, the Comelec also deleted 487,721 people from the official list of voters due to death, transfer of location, double registration or application for overseas absentee voting.

The Comelec also announced that there are now more than 4.8 million Filipinos who have filed their applications to become registered voters in time for the 2025 elections.

Calabarzon recorded the most number of applicants with 801,784, followed by the National Capital Region with 654,468 and Central Luzon with 557,082.

Meanwhile, the regions with the lowest number of registrants are the Cordillera Administrative Region with 64,613, Mimaropa with 126,071 and Caraga with 129,618.
