Gilas women fall to Chinese Taipei FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup quarters
MANILA, Philippines -- The Gilas Pilipinas women saw their FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup run come to a screeching halt after they bowed to a tough Chinese Taipei side, 19-9, Sunday afternoon in Singapore.
The Philippines struggled against the strong defense of Chinese Taipei, which continuously pounded the ball inside for the quarterfinal win.
Gilas led early on, 5-4, thanks to a great start by Camille Clarin and Kaye Pingol.
Chinese Taipei then heated up with a 5-0 run capped by a layup by Yu Chieh Chen to take a 9-5 run.
This was enough separation as the Philippines just could not buy enough baskets.
After Mikka Cacho broke the run, 9-6, Hung-Ting Kuo and Chen teamed up and unleashed four straight points to put the game out of reach, 13-6.
Kaye Pingol and Jhazmin Joson tried to tow the Philippines back, 14-8, but a 2-pointer by Shih-Han Hsu plunged the dagger to Gilas' hearts, 16-8.
Chen and Kuo had eight points apiece for Chinese Taipei. Hsu added three points.
Clarin and Cacho had three points each for Gilas women, who missed all 11 of their 2-point attempts.
Pingol had two while Joson had a marker for the Philippines.
In the semifinals, Chinese Taipei will face New Zealand, which earlier defeated Japan, 15-14.
The men's team of Gilas also bowed out of contention in the tournament after dropping back-to-back losses, against Australia and Japan on Saturday.
