Bishop at home with Ginebra

Tony Bishop is back in the PBA, but now with Barangay Ginebra. He has the daunting task of taking the place of resident import Justin Brownlee, who has led the Gin Kings to so many titles and was also the MVP of the Asian Games gold medal squad of the Philippines.

After many tours of duty in many countries like Denmark, Lithuania, Puerto Rico and Germany, Bishop hit the local shores in 2021 with the Meralco Bolts and faced Ginebra in the finals. 

Apparently, it was that familiarity that convinced Coach Tim Cone to bring in Bishop this conference.

As the playoffs begin tonight, Tony took some time to share his thoughts on being back in the country and playing with the crowd favorites this time around.

You made the quarters with a twice-to-beat advantage, it seems you fit in seamlessly with Ginebra?

Bishop: It was a challenge for me to learn the triangle offense, but I worked on it every day, I spent a lot of time to understand what Tim Cone wanted me to do, and I was asking questions each and every day. I worked on the chemistry with the guys so I can help the team win ballgames, and for myself to play well on both ends of the floor.

What were your first thoughts when the team called you? 

Bishop: I was surprised actually, because Justin Brownlee was here forever! But once I understood the situation it was a no-brainer for me. To come play for a legendary coach, play with great players, I was on the next flight out here.

You’ve now played for two of the winningest coaches in the league, how’s it like with Tim?

Bishop: It’s really good, because he makes me think outside the box. I’ve played for coaches who don’t really know the game, but Coach Tim studies the game and he challenges you as a player to give it your all and challenges you to get better. He makes you understand the game. He shows you different ways you can score, get your teammates involved, and defensively how you defend different guys. This is my twelfth year professionally and to be challenged the way I am is really impressive. T be with this mastermind is really a blessing.

Was there any pressure knowing you were replacing Brownlee?

Bishop: There was no pressure. I’m my own man, he is his own man. He did what he did here, which is great. It’s impressive and amazing what he did for Ginebra. For me, I just play my game and do what I can to win ballgames. I salute Justin and respect him for what he’s done. We competed in the finals when I was with Meralco. 

Is it better now that you’re playing with the crowd favorite?

Bishop: Hahaha! For me, I love it! But don’t get me wrong, I love the cheers and the boos. I’ve been on both sides. When I was with Meralco, they’re booing me, and it gave me a boost. I love it when the crowd is engaged. They can talk crap, they can give me hell. I love that. Now being on this side, the fans are our sixth man, it gives us the energy that we need each and every game. It’s also beneficial. 

What can the fans expect this coming playoffs?

Bishop: Just expect us to continue to work together, and build on our chemistry. We will continue to do our best to win ballgames, the goal is to handle the business and see what the future entails. Let’s pack the arena so we can get that extra energy and we’ll do our best on the court.
