Eagles hold off Maroons, barge into UAAP win column
MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University kept the University of the Philippines at bay, 87-79, to notch their first win in the UAAP men's basketball tournament, Wednesday night at the Big Dome.
Four Blue Eagels—led by Thirdy Ravena—spoiled Fighting Maroons Juan Gomez de Liaño's career-best performance of 29 points.
"We’re getting everyone’s best. We are happy for the fight," said Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin. "[That] UP team is really good, aren’t they?"
The victory affords the defending champion Ateneo its first win since losing to Adamson University in a stunner last Sunday.
The Blue Eagles went to the freethrow line for a staggering 31 times. The made 26 of their shots there. The Maroons, on the other hand, had seven looks and converted four.
Ateneo faces FEU this Saturday at the same venue.
UP figures in a battle of 1-1 teams with UST, Sunday at the FilOil Flying-V Arena in San Juan.
