MANILA, Philippines — University of Santo Tomas put up a valiant stand late in the fourth quarter to pull the rug from under Far Eastern University, 76-74, and rebound from a season-opening loss last weekend in Wednesday's UAAP skirmishes at the Big Dome.

Marvin Lee and new Growling Tiger Kenneth Zamora teamed up for UST last-ditch effort, breaking the tie at 71 and hiking UST's lead in the final 20 ticks of the game.

Arvin Tolentino, riding high from his performance against last season's finalsts De La Salle University, had a chance to send the game into overtime but botched his shot.

"Very deserving ang UST (of the win). Kasi, ramdamn ko ‘yung time [from coach Boy Sablan], naramdaman ko ‘yung community. They deserved this, kasi grabe ‘yung suporta," first-year UST mentor Aldin Ayo—who steered DLSU to two finals apperances and won a crown—told the press during the post-game chat.  "I know it’s too early. ‘Di tayo makukuntento dito."

According to UAAP's stats chief Pong Ducanes, the victory snaps the Growling Tigers' five-game losing skid against the Tamaraws.

FEU also remains winless against an Ayo-coached team in the UAAP.

UST faces University of the Philippines next. They tangle September 16 at the FilOil Flying-V Arena in San Juan.

DLSU shoots for a comeback win against defending champions Ateneo de Manila University, this Saturday at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
