MANILA, Philippines - National University drubbed University of the East, 97-70, to complete an eight-game sweep even as Chiang Kai Shek College took the last semifinal berth despite a 64-80 setback to Ateneo in the second PCABL Jumbo Plastic Linoleum Cup at the Philippine Buddhacare Academy gym in Quezon City last Sunday.
John Clemente scored seven of his 15 points in the opening period as the Bullpups took control early, 29-13, before Neil Tolentino and Winderlick Loyola took over to finish off the Junior Warriors, 54-34.
Aside from Clemente, four other NU players scored in double figures to underscore the team’s balanced attack.
As the No. 1 team, NU enjoys a twice-to-beat advantage when it battles No. 4 Chiang Kai Shek College in the next round of the event backed by Smart Telecom, Advance Solutions Inc., Hapee Toothpaste, Fed Seal, Powerhouse, CW Home Depot and Powerbest Marketing.
The Blue Dragons finished tied for fourth with University of the Philippines Integrated School at 4-3 despite bowing to the Ateneo Eaglets. CKSC nailed the last semis seat by virtue of a winner-over-the-other rule.
Ateneo, which finished No. 2 in the elims with a 7-1 record, collides with No. 3 Far Eastern University in the other semis pairing after the Baby Tamaraws clobbered Hope Christian High School, 79-43.
