MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Mavericks' Richard Gasquet lost in the first set only to mount a ferocious comeback and upset the World No. 6 Tomas Berdych in the US Open.
Gasquet, who has met the Czech superstar 12 times in his career, has finally broken their head-to-head deadlock of 6 wins each.
Also a right-handed netter, the Maverick leaned on first serve winners en route to the 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-1 win. He was perfect in net points fired (9 shots) and was able to improve 5-9 in games where he lost the first set.
The Frenchman, who is best known for his sharp backhands, is currently ranked No. 12 in the world. This is the first he and Berdych met in the New York major.
They last met in the Madrid Masters with Berdych with the victory.
Gasquet, who is suiting up for the Mavericks alongside Serena Williams (who is still in contention and still eligible to rewrite history), will swing by the country in December for the International Premier Tennis League.
He is now advancing to the US Open quarterfinals -- his best outing since reaching the semifinals two years ago.
