PSL tankers bag 12 gold medals in Singapore meet

The Philippine Star

SINGAPORE – Philippine Swimming League (PSL) Swimmers of the Year Sean Terence Zamora and Kyla Soguilon struck hard with another record-breaking performance in their respective events to lead the country’s 12-gold medal haul on Day 2 of the 2015 Singapore Invitational Swimming Championship being held at the Singapore Island Country Club (SICC).

Zamora set a new record in the boys’ 14-15 100-meter backstroke in one minute, 2.95 seconds, smashing the 1:04.52 old mark of Asian Games gold medalist and Olympian Joseph Schooling of Singapore in 2010.

Soguilon, a Sun Yat Sen School-Kalibo standout, also made waves by submitting 1:16.78 in the girls’ 10-11 100m backstroke to surpass the 1:17.44 old mark of Thai Niece Damrongat in 2010. She added another gold in the 50m freestyle (31.53) to strengthen her bid of claiming the Most Outstanding Swimmer award in her age-group.

“It’s a great performance by our swimmers breaking record of good swimmers like Schooling and Damrongat. The Singapore Sports School swimmers are here. They are supported by the Singaporean government and it’s nice to compete against strong swimmers like them,”said PSL president Susan Papa.

Diliman Preparatory School’s Gianna Millen Data contributed two gold medals (girls’ 16-17 50m breaststroke, 40.53, and 100m butterfly, 1:19.36) while Maxine Dalmacio (girls’ 10-11 200m freestyle, 2:52.36), Lee Grant Cabral (boys’ 8-9 50m freestyle, 36.20), Martin Jacob Pupos (boys’ 16-17 100m butterfly, 1:01.55), Nigel Timothy Romey (boys’ 12-13 100m backstroke, 1:13.75) and Charize Julian Esmero (girls’ 12-13 100m backstroke, 1:13.79) copped one gold each.
