MANILA, Philippines – Two-time NBA All Star Damian Lillard is looking forward to a second trip to the country if not this off-season, perhaps next year.
Lillard's first Manila visit did not turn out well. The Portland Trail Blazers playmaker was part of the failed Last Home Stand last year.
In a recent conference-call with international media that included Philstar.com, Lillard promised to return soon.
"(Definitely) it’s already in the works. If I have an open window to visit this summer I would, if not this summer hopefully next summer," Lillard said.
Despite the controversy that hounded his first visit in Manila, he still considers it as a great experience, largely due to Filipino basketball fans.
"I had a chance to visit the Philippines this past summer to play in the last home stand. It didn’t turn out to be what they wanted it to happen but for me, personally, it was a great experience. I enjoyed exploring out there. It felt good for them to know us and to get great reception and to see their passion for the game of basketball," said the 2012 6th overall pick.
But the possibility of Lillard playing before Manila fans is slim. His second trip might just be confined with guest appearances in connection with his new sneaker line with adidas and other NBA fan activities.
As a Derrick Rose and Steve Nash fan, Lillard is happy to have shared the court with them.
"I was a huge D-Rose fan even Steve Nash fan. Now the opportunity to play against them, it’s crazy," Lillard said.
Not only that he shares the court with his idol but Lillard also followed Derrick Rose's footsteps by having his own sneaker line with adidas.
"It means a lot just having your own shoes. Not a lot of guys have that opportunity. I'm so blessed," Lillard said.
Recently, adidas launched his first signature shoe, which retails at fan-friendly price of Php 5,695.
"The price point was low. We decided to not include the boost because I wanted it to be more accessible to more people," Lillard said.
His signature low-top shoes are available at all adidas outlets and the NBA store in Glorietta, Makati.
