Larong Volleyball wants to enlist quality coaches

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas, Inc. is on the lookout for coaches who can permanently work for the national team.

“We have to form a pool of coaches. We will identify these coaches and upgrade their skills,” said LVPI president Jose Romasanta yesterday.

Romasanta said it’s time to move forward, considering that the LVPI now enjoys the recognition of the International Volleyball Federation or FIVB.

The Philippine Olympic Committee has also recognized the LVPI, which is now tasked to form teams to the Asian Under-23 Women’s Championship in May.

The LVPI is also making sure that the Philippines will be represented well in the 28th SEA Games in Singapore in June.

Romasanta has tapped Roger Gorayeb as head coach of the women’s team. There’s a pool of talented players but the LVPI head said it’s not enough.

“We can’t just focus on the players. We also have to prioritize the coaches,” said Romasanta.

Also part of the plan is to have more referees accredited by the FIVB.

Romasanta said he will soon consult with the available coaches so they could determine where to look and where to find the extra help.

Once formed, the pool of coaches will be given specific tasks and specific teams to handle.

“We will determine the coaches that we need for all the teams, the men’s, women’s and others. This should be the concern of the federation and not politics.

“This is a clear strategy for great coaching and officiating. These are the things that need urgency,” he said.
