Cebu CC grabs 7-point lead over Southwoods

The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines – Lois Kaye Go fired 53 points as Cebu Country Club pooled a 281 and posted a seven-point lead over fancied Manila Southwoods-Masters at the start of the ninth PAL Ladies Interclub at the Alta Vista Golf Club here yesterday.

Go, 14, gunned down four birdies against two bogeys and a pick-up on No. 10 to card a one-over card in stroke play while Mary Kim Hong added a 52 and Junia Gabasa added 47 points, Marie Olea and Crystal Faith Superal contributed 44s and Myra Jae Wong chipped in 41 points for that 281 output.

Catrina Martinez’s 40 and Jaime Wong’s 30 didn’t count for the team in the eight-to-play, six-to-count format event.

SW-Masters, competing with just seven players, drew 51 points from Sofia Chabon but Annika Cedo never got to figure out the slow greens of the up-and-down layout and scored just 48 points for a 274 total.

Sofia Legaspi contributed 46 for the four-peat-seeking SW-Masters, which also got 45 points from Lora Roberto, 43 from Christine Valdehueza and 41 from skipper Beachie Abiera while Marie Claire Ong failed to count with a 37.

“We had a bad start, maybe because of our unfamiliarity with the course,” said Abiera. “There were just greens that we couldn’t figure out. And it really slowed us down today. But we’re still there.”

The final 18 holes will be played tomorrow, with Del Monte lagging behind with a 228.

The event is sponsored by Boeing, Airbus, B/E Aerospace, Diamond Hotel Phils., Eastgate Publishing, Bluewater Maribago and Mareco Broadcasting Network (Crossover).

Tagaytay Highlands, meanwhile, raced to an imposing 31-point lead in the Sportswriters division with a 212 built around the 41 points of Sun Kim Hee and 35s from Virginia Bote and Maria Rosario Dimson.

Bernadette Wong and skipper Hedy See shot 34s while Rosalie Heo added a 33 for Tagaytay, the Friendship Division champion two years ago in Bacolod.

Bacolod Golf Club pooled 181, with defending champion Apo Golf Club in third at 174.

The Friendship Division also had Davao City Golf breaking away with a 48-point lead over Wack Wack.

Roselyn Sara led Davao with 38 followed by Virginia Hermiston’s 36. Other scorers were Josephine Vergara 35, JM Balbuena 34, Evelyn Quinsay 33 and Stella Barnes 30.

Wack Wack got 40 points from Alice Jay Crisologo and 34 from Charlene Abalos, but Sofia Araneta struggled with a 25, Margaret Tan 21, Deeana Mendiola 19 and Tessa Taira 19.

Camp Aguinaldo was in third spot with 152 with Jocelyn Untal leading the way with 40. Other scorers were Janeth Agripa 26, Leonora Cabili 24, Ruby Hamis 24, Edlyn Robas 22 and Barbara Cruz 18.
