MANILA, Philippines - Defending champions Centro Escolar University and San Beda College Alabang moved one win away from retaining their respective titles as they thumped their rivals in the opener of the 45th WNCAA seniors best-of-three finals last Sunday.
Three-time basketball champion CEU downed Rizal Technological University, 66-56, at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum with the Scorpions also extending their unbeaten streak to eight this season.
Over at the St. Scholastica Manila gym, SBCA dominated RTU, 25-13, 25-23, 25-14, for a similar 1-0 lead in the volley finals while stretching its win run to nine.
Both CEU (4 p.m.) and SBCA (11 a.m.) go for the championships Sunday, also at RMC.
CEU, meanwhile, ended RTU’s four-year reign in senior futsal as it pulled off a 2-0 finals win at the Scorpions’ homecourt. Assumption College nipped Philippine Women’s University, 1-0, in the battle for third.
In midgets basketball, defending champion De La Salle Zobel walloped St. Stephen’s High School, 49-26, for an 8-0 elimination round sweep and the first finals slot. SSHS (4-3) can arrange a best-of-three duel against DLSZ if it beats Poveda on Saturday.
Defending junior champion Chiang Kai Shek College and host La Salle College Antipolo will meet in the best-of-three finals, also on Sunday, after ousting their respective Final Four foes.
CKSC edged Miriam College, 55-51, while LSCA outlasted DLSZ, 60-53, in the league being supported by Mikasa, Molten, OneA Bed and Breakfast, Goody, Monster Radio RX 93.1 and AksyonTV, Miriam’s midget and junior squads also topped the elimination round.
Miriam and St. Paul College Pasig will tangle for the midgets volleyball title on Oct. 11.
