Cruz, So reach Toby’s semifinal

MANILA, Philippines - Monica Therese Cruz slammed Marriane Hipolito, 6-0, 6-0, and Camille So dumped Cionna Frederique Villaflor, 6-4, 6-1, to barge into the semifinals of the 16-under girls division of the 13th Toby’s Summer Tennis Festival at the Rizal Tennis Center yesterday.

Martina Bautista and Frances Angelica Santiago likewise made it through with the former eking out a come-from-behind 2-6, 7-5, 10-4 victory over Kielz Kyla Diaz and the latter waylaying Ruby Lopez, 6-0, 6-0.

In the boys’ 18-under section, Ivan Dame was one of the first to make the second round after he overcame a stubborn Jose Sanbuenaventur, 7-5, 6-0, to join Raymart Postera and Ivan Lazaro, who made it through with walkover wins.

In the 10-under unisex level, Kay Ann Emana blanked Ethan Aldrin Geluz, 4-0, 4-0; Shant Nuguit trounced Von Saraza, 5-3, 4-2; Kryshana Brazal smashed Marius Panahon, 4-1, 4-1; Brent So defeated Ma. Kristina Cuaresma, 5-3, 4-0; Alyssa Mae Rosales downed Mica Ella Emana, 5-3, 4-1;

Pete Anrei Rodriguez blasted Andre Justin Garcia, 4-0, 4-1; Jimuel Galabay outlasted Nicos Katigbak, 4-2, 4-2; Samuel Nuguit ousted Macie Carlos, 4-1, 4-0; Justine Hannah Maneja edged Noelle So, 5-3, 2-4, 10-4; Renzo Villapando outplayed Joshua Diva, 4-1, 4-0; and Jose Thomas Bernardo waylaid Simoune Ysmael Firma, 4-0, 4-0. 

Also moving on were Riley Mathieu Banaag and Sean Andre Bernardo.

In the boys’ 14-under category, Marraphael Teng turned back Joshua Austria, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5; Tim Gumban eliminated Angelo Saraza, 4-6, 6-1, 10-4; Allan Jeric Ordinario outclassed Jomarie Gammad, 6-0, 6-1; Joseph Anida sent Jennard Gonzales packing, 7-5, 6-1.

The event is presented by Toby’s Sports and Prince, in partnership with Smart, and in cooperation with the Philta, Equipe, Adidas and Gatorade and sanctioned by the Phl Tennis Association.
