ABAP eyes CDO boxer for national pool

MANILA, Philippines - Jeronel Borres disposed of Renemark Cuarto of Saranggani Province in the youth boys pinweight finals to power Cagayan de Oro to the overall championship in the PLDT-ABAP Mindanao Area boxing tournament at the Tourism Hall in Cagayan de Oro over the weekend.

Borres, 17, showed his quickness, timing and solid defense to easily beat Cuarto via unanimous decision, 30-26, 30-25, 30-24, in a performance tipped to net him a spot in the national pool.

Borres’ division attracted the most number of participants – 11 – in the five-day boxfest.

“This is my first gold in this division and I will try to win again in the national finals and then hopefully make the national pool,” said Borres.

Four more members of CDO-A won their respective bouts as the team took the overall title in the event supported by PLDT and Philippine Sports Commission, beating CDO Team B and Pacman with 5-1-1 gold-silver-bronze medals.

Carlo Paalam, a 15-year old boxer who has dominated the Kids division the past two years, lorded over the Junior Boys pinweight class, beating Samuel Salva of Gingoog City by unanimous decision.
