Muncal dominates MCC chess series

MANILA, Philippines - Martin Marcus Muncal of San Sebastian College topped the junior division in the final evaluation of the fourth Milo-sponsored Checkmate year-round chess clinics at SSC-Recoletos in Manila last weekend.

Muncal, 13, swept the five-round tournament that capped the two-month long fourth of five series of chess training organized by the Metropolitan Chess Club. The event aims to monitor the performance of the enrollees after having given them a series of chess lessons in seven consecutive Saturdays.  

Jerome Arellano of Sacred Heart Academy of Novaliches finished second with four points while Juan Katapang, also from SSC, placed third with three points.

Other winners were Patrick Feliciano and Chezka Dansalan (12-under); Angelo Ordonio, William Arenas, Gabriel Fajilan, Zachary Africa and Malaya Quiambao (10-under); while

six-year-old Cedric Khalel Abris ruled the 8-under section.  

Ordonio, Africa, Miguel Tan, William Sebastian Chuawee and Mark Quemado also topped Beginners I while Julian Dimaandal and Muncal Beginners 3; Dansalan and Arenas reigned in Beginners 2 class.

Others cited were Eliza Janel Tan (most organized), Stephen Mansueto (most discipline), Arenas (most improved) and Abris (sportsmanship). The medals and trophies were provided by the sponsoring Milo.
