MANILA, Philippines - Taekwondo newcomers get a chance to display their techniques and styles May 4-5 with the staging of the 2013 SMART National New Face of the Year Championships at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
No less than 1,500 male and female athletes are expected to compete in the novice and advance divisions, according to organizing committee chairman Sung Chon Hong.
There will be eight categories in the two-day event – senior men and women, junior men and women, cadet men and women and grade school boys and girls.
Participants will come from Philippine Taekwondo Association chapters and branches throughout Metro Manila and the provinces including the different military outfits like the PNP, Navy, Air Force and PMA.
Supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, SMART Communications, MVP Sports Foundation, PLDT, Meralco, TV 5 and MILO, the tourney is also part of the PTA’s commitment to develop sports in support of the government’s grassroots program.
According to Hong, the competitors will go all out to show the skills, determination, confidence and discipline they have been trained to do in their rigid workouts.
Parents and children who are interested to enroll their children in taekwondo as well as sports enthusiasts are invited to watch the competition, starting at 9 a.m.
