Sultan Cup caps Romero polofest

MANILA, Philippines - With the presence of top-notch pros, expect a tough but high-scoring game when Globalport 900’s Sultan Cup – the centerpiece of the two-day polo festival – is held today at the Alabang Country Club polo field.

Two playing patrons – Mikee Romero of Globalport and Thai Tal Srivaddhanaprabha – will head Team Masserati when it collides with Team Jaguar in the most awaited match of the event dubbed as “Clash of the Titans”.

Out to provide Romero and Srivaddhanaprabha the much-needed firepower are Argentinian pro Miguel Diaz and the well-decorated Anthony Garcia.

Toughened by a series of tournaments in the US, the group of Romero enjoys a slight edge over Team Jaguar which will be spearheaded by Santi Juban – one of the emerging stars of the sport.

“I think the group of Mikee is much stronger than us,” said Juban. “But we’ll give them a good and exciting match.”

Romero, however, refused to be swayed by Juban’s comments, saying: “We can’t take our chances. We have to play very hard and play as one big unit to prevail.”

Juban will be reinforced by Andrian Garcia, Argentinian Santi Galland and Mexican Isidro Olivas – veterans of so many battles in the US and Europe.

The event, also to be graced by UAAP women’s volleyball three-peat winner La Salle, is a fitting sequel to the successful staging of the first-ever AirAsia Crystal Cup held the other day also at the ACC field.

Fine dining, good music and the chance to drive luxurious cars also await fans during the main event of the festival presented by the Romeros.

As an appetizer, a low-goal tournament involving three teams will be held in the morning with American leading the Blue team along with the father and son tandem of Freddie and Sonny Borromeo. Also on their team are Milka Romero and Eduardo Lopes who will play two chucks each.
